The Julidochromis cichlid, commonly referred to as Julie cichlid, is a group of small, attractive, and fascinating cichlids native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. They are known for their unique behavior and striking appearance, often displaying black stripes or bars against a yellowish background. These fish prefer rocky habitats and enjoy swimming in and around crevices and caves.

Julidochromis cichlids are relatively peaceful for cichlids but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They feed on small invertebrates and algae in the wild, and in captivity, they thrive on a varied diet consisting of quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods.

They do well in a well-decorated tank with plenty of rocky structures, caves, and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat. Water conditions should be alkaline, with a pH between 7.8-8.6 and a temperature range of 75-82°F. These fish can coexist with other Tanganyikan cichlids but might display territorial behavior, especially when breeding.
